Ringtones
Ringtones refer to the custom sounds that are available now
on most mobile phones. Ringtones allow you to distinguish you
call sound from that of other people, and often it is a style
statement or reflection of your personality. There are three
types of ringtones:
- Mono Tones: Most of the phones that were
available in the market yesteryears could only play monophonic
tones. These were of shorter duration and had extremely simple
tones.
- Poly Tones: According to Wikipedia, "Polyphonic
means that multiple notes can be played at the same time using
instrument sounds such as guitar, drums, electronic piano,
etc. Many phones are now able to play more complex polyphonic
tones; up to 128 individual notes with different instruments are
played simultaneously to give a more realistic musical sound."
The handset capability determines the quality of the polyphonic
sound, and some of the latest handsets support 128 notes.
- True Tones: In true tones, you use the "pulse-code
modulation encoding of the real sound." The real sound can be a
normal audio file in a .wav, .mp3, .wma or any other similar
format. You will need a software application in your mobile
handset to listen to that specific True tone format.

Caller Back Tones
Caller back tones or ring back tones refer to the tone heard
by someone before you answer the call. Caller back tones are not
content downloads and have to set at the operator
end. Personalized ring back are extremely popular these days,
and combine different types of audio messages and tones.
